TWENTY-ONE

The phone in Giddings’ room rang at 7:30 A.M.

“It’s Brian at the front desk. One of those Demon Riders was just in here getting a cup of coffee and some ice. He bought a newspaper from the machine out front and now he’s sitting at the picnic table.”

“Thanks. I’ll be right out.”

Giddings’ clothes were still a little damp, but he had no other options. He put on his uniform and stepped outside. It was a mild morning, and the birds were chirping away. He approached the biker and took a seat across from him at the picnic table.

“Help you?” said Uptown Mike, looking up from his paper. He had ice wrapped in a t-shirt, which he would occasionally press against his forehead.

“I’m Sheriff Giddings. I was hoping I could ask you a few questions.”

“Ivor County. I saw your car this morning. Ivor County, Texas. I’ve lived in Texas all my life, and I’ve never heard of Ivor County.”

“Lot of counties in Texas.”

“That’s true. But here’s the thing, Sheriff. We’re not in Texas anymore. We’re just outside Pueblo, Colorado. You know those commercials on TV? Write to us and we’ll send you all these free government pamphlets about how to lose weight or save money on your electric bill? Well, that’s Pueblo, Colorado, and that ain’t in Texas, and you ain’t got no jurisdiction here. So no, I don’t believe I’ll answer your questions today.”

Uptown Mike pressed the ice against his forehead and went back to reading his paper. Giddings didn’t move. He noticed a small Band-Aid on the biker’s neck.

“Cut yourself shaving?”

“That sounded like a question.”

“Well, here’s a statement. I know you didn’t cut yourself shaving. I know that’s not just a hangover ailing your head. I know it happened at the Silver Dollar roadhouse in Amarillo. And I know who was responsible. Not only that, but I know where they’re going.”

Uptown Mike laughed. “Big deal. I already know that, because we’re going to the same place.”

“Oh. Of course. Evel Knievel. I guess everyone who’s anyone will be there.”

“The fellas who did this to me, they ain’t gonna be there long once I catch up to ’em.”

“Hmm. Sounds like we’ve got a problem. See, I can’t let you get between me and the Melville boys. You know they’re wanted fugitives? One of ’em killed my deputy. My best man.”

“Cry me a river.”

For a brief moment, Giddings remembered Gwen lying in the morgue and thought he actually might cry. He could feel his eyes getting moist, but he shook it off.

“I’m gonna tell you something, since it’s just the two of us chatting here and I’m tired of telling the same fucking lie over and over. See, I don’t care that my deputy’s dead. Hell, I wanted him dead myself. You don’t know how many hairy situations I sent him into without any backup, just hoping for an outcome unfavorable to him. But the man was simply too good at his job. What he didn’t know—what I don’t think he ever knew while alive on this earth—is that I was in love with his wife.
